1. Subject Looking

When posing a portrait subject, an important question to ask yourself include:

“Where are they looking?”

Where your subject is looking can have a real impact upon your image.

Here are a couple of considerations to keep in mind when making a decision on how to pose your subject:

Looking Away From The Camera:

If your subject is looking at something other than the camera viewers will naturally want to see what it is. You then have two choices – either to show them or not hide the object of their gaze.

If the object is within the frame this will often create a focal point for your shots.

If the subject looks outside the frame it can create either tension or intrigue. This can either spoil or make the shot!

Looking Directly At The Camera:

Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking a picture of someone, hold the camera at the person’s eye level to unleash the power of those magnetic gazes and mesmerizing smiles.

The direction that your subject looks when being photographed can have a profound impact upon an image so give it careful consideration. Many different poses can work and will alter the mood and focal point of the image considerably.

The key is to know what you’re wanting to achieve and to experiment with different set ups to get those results.

2. Using Artificial Light

As well as using natural daylight to illuminate your subjects, you can also use artificial light. Lamps are the most obvious source of artificial light. They can be used to light up your subject in the absence of natural light, and they also make interesting subjects themselves.

The artificial light sources typically used in photography are constant lights (lamps, daytime permanent photographic lights, hand lamps, etc.) and flashes (studio flash generators and flash guns). Taking pictures with a constant light source is similar to taking pictures with natural light; the main difference lies in the fact that you have many more ways to influence the characteristics of that light.

3. Lock The Focus

Focus lock is a handy tool for doing just that. It allows you to focus on the most important part of your scene and then hold that focus while you recompose the shot, ensuring your final image has the correct parts in focus.

How to Set up for It?

Before you use the focus lock, you’ll want to be sure your camera is in the correct AF mode. You can utilize any of the focus points in the viewfinder, but in most cases, the center point is the easiest to use and it will be one of the higher precision points in the camera, too. Set your camera to allow you to manually select the AF point and set only the central one as active.

4. Use A Plain Background

Look for plain backgrounds and avoid strong patterns or clutter behind your subject. A single subject against a plain background will stand out better and make a stronger image. If what’s behind your subject is visually imposing it will distract attention from your subject.

By taking your photo from a low angle, the sky will make a good plain background, especially on a cloudless day or at night. Get up higher, above your subject, and a nice lawn or large paved area can work well. A long fence or the side of a building with no windows will provide you with an effective plain background as well.

5. Give Your Subject Some Distance

Don’t place your subjects too close to the background. If your subject is too close to the background you will have too much in focus and your subject will not stand out. By putting some distance between your subject and what’s behind it, your subject will be sharp and what’s behind can be blurred out, (if you use a wide enough aperture setting.)

But you don’t always need to completely blur the background. Sometimes it’s good to still be able to see what’s going on behind your subject by having it only somewhat out of focus. This can work particularly well with environmental portraits where you want the background recognizable, but not be imposing.
